UEFA Playoffs 2026 World Cup: Full Schedule, Results, Bracket & Format
Sixteen European nations entered the 2026 World Cup playoffs in March 2026. Only four will make it to North America this summer.
The semi-finals took place on March 26. The four finals are set for March 31. Each match is do-or-die. One bad result and a country’s World Cup year is over before it really started.
Italy are trying to end a 12-year absence from the World Cup. Kosovo are one game away from qualifying for the first time ever. Sweden have Viktor Gyokeres in the form of his life. The stakes could not be higher.

Key Stories Going Into the Finals
Four finals. Four World Cup spots. Here is what makes each tie worth watching.
Italy vs Bosnia-Herzegovina (Path A Final)
Italy last played at a World Cup in 2014. They missed both 2018 and 2022 after painful playoff exits. Manager Gennaro Gattuso has rebuilt the squad and his side were sharp against Northern Ireland. Sandro Tonali broke the deadlock in the 56th minute with a powerful strike from the edge of the box. He then turned provider and set up Moise Kean to finish in the 80th minute. Italy travel to Zenica to face Bosnia in the final.
Bosnia are not an easy opponent. Their 40-year-old captain Edin Dzeko scored a late header in the 86th minute to pull level against Wales and drag the tie to extra time. He is still leading this team from the front. The final is at Stadion Bilino Polje and Bosnia will have a full home crowd behind them.
A win for Italy ends a 12-year World Cup drought. A win for Bosnia sends Dzeko to a World Cup at 40 years old.
Sweden vs Poland (Path B Final)
Viktor Gyokeres scored all three goals as Sweden beat Ukraine 3-1. He has been the best player in these playoffs by some distance. Arsenal’s striker is on a run of form that Poland will need to find an answer to on March 31.
Poland have their own weapon. Robert Lewandowski is 37 and this is almost certainly his last shot at a World Cup. He scored against Albania and leads Poland’s attack the same way he always has. His record for Poland stands at 88 goals in 163 appearances. Sweden host this final at Strawberry Arena in Solna and will be the favourites in front of their own fans.
Kosovo vs Turkey (Path C Final)
Kosovo beat Slovakia 4-3 in Bratislava in what was the game of the semi-finals. They trailed. They fought back. They won away from home against a stronger-ranked side. For a nation that has never played at a World Cup, this is history in the making.
Turkey are a different challenge. Vincenzo Montella has built a disciplined side around Arda Guler and Hakan Calhanoglu. They beat Romania without conceding. Kosovo host this final at Fadil Vokrri Stadium in Pristina and they go into it with nothing to lose.
Czechia vs Denmark (Path D Final)
Denmark were the most impressive team across all eight semi-finals. A 4-0 win over North Macedonia was comfortable and controlled. They go into the final in Prague as clear favourites.
Czechia got through on character rather than quality. They drew 2-2 with Ireland and goalkeeper Matej Kovar saved two penalties in the shootout. It was a nervy night in Prague but they got the result. Denmark travel to Prague for the final on March 31.
World Cup European Playoffs Format & Rules Explained
The playoff format is straightforward once you know how it works.
Seeding & Home Advantage
UEFA seeded teams based on FIFA rankings from November 2025. The higher-ranked team in each semi-final pair got home advantage. That is why Italy hosted Northern Ireland and Denmark hosted North Macedonia.
The final host was not automatically the higher-ranked team. UEFA held a separate draw after the semi-final pairings were set. That draw decided which team would host the final in each pathway.
Single Elimination
Every match in the playoffs is a straight knockout. There are no second legs. No away-goal rules. No replays. Win and you advance. Lose and you go home. Each team gets one match to prove themselves.
Match Rules
Matches start with 90 minutes of normal time. A draw after 90 minutes leads to 30 minutes of extra time. That splits into two 15-minute halves. A draw after extra time goes straight to penalties. Five players take kicks each. Sudden death follows if it stays level.
Substitutions
Teams get five substitutions in normal time. A team can use one extra substitution in extra time for a total of six. The extra sub is only available if the match reaches that stage.
Yellow Cards
Any yellow cards picked up in the qualifying group stage carry over into the playoff semi-finals. A player who already has bookings could face a suspension risk. Cards reset before the finals. Red cards in any match mean an automatic one-game ban.
VAR Technology
VAR is active across all playoff matches. Officials can review goals, penalty decisions, red cards and cases of mistaken identity. Goal-line technology also runs throughout. Both systems are there to make sure major calls are correct.
FIFA Intercontinental Playoff (2 Additional World Cup Spots)
The UEFA playoffs are not the only route to the 2026 World Cup. FIFA is running a separate 6-team intercontinental playoff in Mexico for two more spots in the 48-team field.
Bolivia, DR Congo, Iraq, Jamaica, New Caledonia and Suriname are all competing for those final two places. The semi-finals took place on March 26 and the finals are on March 31. Bolivia already beat Suriname 2-1 and now face Iraq in their final.

UEFA World Cup 2026 Playoffs FAQ
How many European teams qualify for the 2026 World Cup?
A total of 16 European teams will play at the 2026 World Cup. Twelve qualified directly by winning their qualifying groups. The other four spots go to the winners of the four playoff paths on March 31.
Why is Sweden in the playoffs despite ranking 40th globally?
Sweden finished second in their qualifying group. Only the group winner gets automatic qualification. UEFA gave Sweden a second chance through their Nations League results. All four Nations League qualifiers enter the playoffs on the same terms as the group runners-up. FIFA ranking has no effect on playoff entry.
What happens if a team withdraws from the playoffs?
UEFA has rules in place for withdrawals. A team pulling out before the semi-finals could be replaced by the next eligible nation in the rankings. A withdrawal after the semi-finals have started results in a walkover for the remaining team. In practice this is extremely rare at this level.
Do playoff winners receive prize money?
UEFA does not pay separate prize money for qualifying through the playoffs. Each team that reaches the World Cup receives a minimum of $10.5 million from FIFA. That figure includes $1.5 million in preparation costs and at least $9 million in base performance fees. Teams that go further in the tournament earn more on top of that.
Have strong teams used playoffs before?
Yes. Portugal needed the playoffs to qualify in both 2010 and 2014. France went through the playoff route to reach the 2010 World Cup. Finishing second in a qualifying group is not uncommon for strong nations. The playoff is a safety net that even top European sides have needed more than once.
