How the UEFA Playoff Format Works

UEFA gave 16 teams a second chance to reach the World Cup. The group was made up of 12 runners-up from the qualifying stage plus four Nations League group winners who did not finish in the top two of their qualifying group.

The 16 teams split into four pathways: A, B, C and D. Each pathway had four teams, two semi-finals and one final. Win both matches and you are at the World Cup. Lose once and you go home.

All matches were single-leg. No second leg, no away goals. A draw after 90 minutes went to 30 minutes of extra time. Ties still level after extra time went to a penalty shootout.

UEFA seeded teams by FIFA ranking from November 2025. The higher-ranked team hosted the semi-final. The final host for each pathway was decided by a separate draw.

Final Results: March 31, 2026

Path A Final: Bosnia-Herzegovina 1-1 AET (Bosnia win 4-1 on pens) vs Italy

Venue: Stadion Bilino Polje, Zenica

Italy took a 15th-minute lead. Goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj played the ball straight to Nicolo Barella, who slipped it through to Moise Kean. Kean finished first-time from the edge of the area.

Italy were reduced to ten men in the 42nd minute when Alessandro Bastoni slid in on Amar Memic as the last defender and received a straight red card. From that point Bosnia dominated possession. Haris Tabaković equalized in the 79th minute, poking home a rebound after Donnarumma had saved Džeko’s header. Extra time did not separate the teams. In the shootout Bosnia scored all four of their attempts. Italy managed only one from three. Bosnia won 4-1 on penalties.

Italy miss the World Cup for a third straight time. They last played at a World Cup in 2014. Edin Džeko, now 40 years old, goes to his first World Cup. Bosnia and Herzegovina make their second-ever World Cup appearance.

Bosnia and Herzegovina go into Group B with Canada, Qatar and Switzerland.

Path B Final: Sweden 3-2 Poland

Venue: Friends Arena, Stockholm

Anthony Elanga gave Sweden the lead in the 20th minute, bending a left-footed effort into the top corner from a Yasin Ayari assist. Nicola Zalewski leveled for Poland in the 33rd minute. Gustaf Lagerbielke headed Sweden back in front from Benjamin Nygren’s free kick in the 44th minute. Karol Świderski tapped in an equalizer for Poland in the 55th minute. The match stayed at 2-2 until Viktor Gyökeres scored from close range in the 88th minute, with Besfort Zeneli picking up the assist.

Robert Lewandowski did not score. For Poland’s 37-year-old captain this was almost certainly his last chance at a World Cup. Sweden go to their first World Cup since 2018, where they reached the quarter-finals.

Sweden go into Group F with the Netherlands, Japan and Tunisia.

Path C Final: Kosovo 0-1 Türkiye

Venue: Fadil Vokrri Stadium, Pristina

Kerem Aktürkoğlu scored in the 53rd minute. Türkiye kept a clean sheet and held on throughout. It is Türkiye’s first World Cup since 2002, a wait of 24 years.

Kosovo hosted their first ever World Cup playoff final on home soil but could not find a goal against a well-organized Türkiye side built around Arda Güler and Hakan Çalhanoğlu.

Türkiye go into Group D with the United States, Paraguay and Australia.

Path D Final: Czechia 2-2 AET (Czechia win 3-1 on pens) vs Denmark

Venue: EPET ARENA, Prague

Pavel Sulc scored in the 3rd minute to give Czechia a fast start. Denmark leveled through Joachim Andersen in the 72nd minute. Ladislav Krejčí put Czechia ahead again in the 100th minute of extra time. Kasper Høgh equalized for Denmark in the 111th minute to force a penalty shootout.

In the shootout, Denmark’s Rasmus Højlund hit the crossbar, Anders Dreyer was saved by Kovář, and Mathias Jensen fired over. Tomáš Chorý, Tomáš Souček and Michal Sadílek all scored for Czechia. Sadílek’s penalty was the decisive kick. Czechia won 3-1 on penalties.

Czechia go to the World Cup for the first time since 2006.

Czechia go into Group A with Mexico, South Africa and South Korea.

2026 UEFA Playoffs FAQ

How many European teams qualify for the 2026 World Cup?

16 teams in total. Twelve qualified by winning their groups. The other four came through the playoffs: Bosnia-Herzegovina, Sweden, Türkiye and Czechia.

Why was Sweden in the playoffs despite ranking 40th in the world?

Sweden finished second in their qualifying group. Only the group winner gets automatic qualification. Sweden earned a playoff place through their Nations League results. All four Nations League teams entered on the same terms as the group runners-up.

Did Italy qualify for the 2026 World Cup?

No. Italy lost to Bosnia and Herzegovina on penalties in the Path A final. It is the third consecutive World Cup Italy has missed, following 2018 and 2022.

What happens to the losing semi-finalists on finals day?

UEFA scheduled a friendly match between the two losing semi-finalists from each path on March 31. So all four pathways still had matches that day.

Do playoff winners get prize money for qualifying?

UEFA does not pay separate prize money for qualifying. Each team that reaches the World Cup receives a minimum of $10.5 million from FIFA, which includes $1.5 million in preparation costs and at least $9 million in base performance fees.

Has a top team ever needed the playoffs to qualify before?

Yes. Portugal went through the playoff route to qualify in both 2010 and 2014. France also used the playoff path to reach the 2010 World Cup. Italy, despite being four-time world champions, have now missed three consecutive World Cups.
