What is the MLS playoffs format?

During the last 25 years, there have been a lot of changes to the Major League Soccer playoffs. When the regular season is over, the top seven teams from both the Western and Eastern Conferences move on to the playoffs.

The regular season of Major League Soccer in 2022 runs from February 26 to October 9 and has a total of 28 teams. There are 25 cities in the league. Three of them are Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver. Each league has 14 teams, and the teams in the other league play each other 26 times.

Before the 2022 season of Major League Soccer, the number of clubs in each Conference was different. With the addition of Charlotte FC, there are now fourteen teams in each Conference.

After the conclusion of the regular season in Major League Soccer in 2022, the first round of the playoffs will most likely take place the weekend of October 15-16, immediately after the finish of the regular season. The final standings and point totals of each team during the regular season are used to decide which seed each club will receive in the playoffs.

The top seven teams from each Conference are eligible to compete in the tournament. Each contest is a first-round encounter between two clubs that compete in the same conference. The club that is seeded higher will serve as the host for this round.

In the first round, the team in second place faces off against the team in seventh place, the team in third place faces off against the team in sixth place, and so on. The teams who win their respective matches advance to the semifinals. The most elite players in Major League Soccer will compete in the MLS Cup final, which will be held on Saturday, November 5th.

When the Major League Soccer regular season is expanded to include 30 clubs the following year, the MLS playoff format will be modified once again. One of the two new clubs that will be joining the league is St. Louis City; the identity of the other team has not yet been disclosed. In the postseason of each league in 2023, there will be eight teams total.
