How the FIFA World Cup 2026 Schedule Works
The FIFA World Cup 2026 schedule uses a brand new format. It is the first 48-team World Cup.
The teams split into 12 groups of four. Each team plays three group games. The top two in every group advance. The eight best third-place teams also go through.
That gives you 32 teams in the knockout bracket. The knockouts open with the Round of 32. Then come the Round of 16, the quarterfinals, the semifinals, and the final. Every knockout game is a single match with no replay.
A third-place play-off takes place the day before the final.
