Qualified Teams for the Inter-Confederation Playoffs

Six teams earned their place in the intercontinental playoffs through their own continental competitions. They come from five different confederations: AFC, CAF, CONMEBOL, OFC and CONCACAF.

FIFA used the November 19, 2025 World Rankings to seed the teams. The top two ranked teams skip the semi-finals entirely. They go straight to the finals and wait for their opponent.

DR Congo (ranked 56th) beat Nigeria 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in the CAF playoff final on November 17, 2025. Their last World Cup was in 1974 when they competed as Zaire. A win in March would end a 52-year absence.

Iraq (ranked 60th) beat the UAE 3-2 on aggregate in the AFC fifth-round playoff. Amir Al-Ammari scored a penalty in the 97th minute to seal the win in dramatic fashion. Iraq last played at the World Cup back in 1986.

Jamaica finished as CONCACAF’s highest-ranked group runner-up. The Reggae Boyz hold the best FIFA ranking among the four unseeded teams. Their only World Cup appearance came in 1998.

Bolivia finished seventh in CONMEBOL qualifying. La Verde last went to the World Cup in 1994. They had the altitude of La Paz on their side during qualifying but this playoff is on neutral ground in Mexico.

Suriname came through as CONCACAF’s second-ranked group runner-up. They have never qualified for a FIFA World Cup. At ranking 121 they carry the longest odds of any team in the bracket.

New Caledonia lost the OFC final to New Zealand but still earned a playoff spot. The French Pacific territory has a population of around 270,000. A World Cup berth would make them one of the smallest nations to ever compete in the tournament.

FIFA held the playoff draw on November 20, 2025 at their headquarters in Zurich. The draw put Jamaica and Suriname into separate paths on purpose. That way at least one CONCACAF team has a clear road to the World Cup.

Path 1 (Playoff 1)

DR Congo sit out the semi-final as the top seed in this path. The winner of New Caledonia vs. Jamaica then travels to face them on March 31. Jamaica come in as strong favorites. FIFA ranks them 80 places above New Caledonia. A one-game knockout can always produce a surprise though.

Path 1 winner joins Portugal, Colombia and Uzbekistan in Group K. Portugal are the top name but Colombia and Uzbekistan are both teams a playoff winner can compete against. A Path 1 winner in good form has a real shot at the round of 32.

Path 2 (Playoff 2)

Iraq go straight to the final as the second seed. They wait to face either Bolivia or Suriname. The Bolivia-Suriname match is the tightest in the bracket. Just 45 ranking places separate the two sides and Suriname showed real quality during qualifying.

Path 2 winner joins France, Senegal and Norway in Group I. France rank among the best teams on the planet. Senegal are the reigning Africa Cup of Nations champions. Norway have Erling Haaland up front. Group I is one of the toughest draws any playoff winner could face.

Intercontinental Playoffs Format & Rules

Match Rules

Every game is a single-leg knockout at a neutral venue. There are no second legs and no home advantage.

  • 90 minutes of regular time plus stoppage time
  • Level after 90 minutes means 30 minutes of extra time
  • Extra time plays the full 30 minutes with no golden goal
  • Teams get one extra substitution in extra time for a total of six
  • Still tied after extra time means a penalty shootout
  • Standard FIFA penalty shootout rules apply throughout

Why Neutral Venues?

FIFA moved to neutral-venue intercontinental playoffs starting with the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. It removes home-field advantage and cuts travel demands for smaller nations. Mexico hosting the 2026 playoffs also serves as a full test run for World Cup operations before June.

Why Two CONCACAF Teams?

Each confederation gets one playoff slot except UEFA which runs its own tournament. CONCACAF got two slots because the United States, Canada and Mexico all co-host the 2026 World Cup. They qualified automatically as hosts which freed up extra CONCACAF spots. Two of those went to the intercontinental playoff.

Notable Storylines to Watch

DR Congo’s 52-year wait. DR Congo last played at the World Cup in 1974 as Zaire. A win in Path 1 ends a 52-year gap. For Congolese football fans this is a once-in-a-generation moment.

Iraq and the last-minute drama. Iraq got here because of a penalty in the 97th minute. That kind of story does not stop at qualifying. A Path 2 win drops them into Group I with France and Haaland’s Norway. The drama is just getting started.

Suriname’s first-ever World Cup. Suriname have never been to a World Cup. Beat Bolivia and they face Iraq for a spot in history. Iraq rank 55 places above them but one game on neutral ground is never a sure thing.

New Caledonia: 270,000 people and a World Cup dream. New Caledonia is a small Pacific territory with a population of about 270,000. Beat Jamaica and they face DR Congo for the most remarkable qualification story of 2026.

The DR Congo visa situation. Mexico’s immigration authority rejected DR Congo’s group visa application before the tournament. Players had to apply one by one. Nigeria also filed a FIFA complaint over DR Congo player eligibility. As of early March 2026 FIFA had not issued a ruling and DR Congo’s place in the playoffs remained secure.
