Avoid pop-up stream sites. They are unsafe and unauthorised.

France Team News: Mbappé Plays Through an Ankle Knock

Didier Deschamps has more worries than the scoreline suggests.

Mbappé is expected to start. He took a heavy knock to his right ankle from Issa Diop against Morocco and asked to come off in the 77th minute. France say he is fit to play.

Tchouaméni is a game-time decision. The groin injury that kept him out of the last two matches has a return date that lands exactly on match day. French media expect Deschamps to start him over Manu Koné if he passes fitness checks.

Koné has physical discomfort after an excellent quarterfinal. One of the two starts, not both.

Upamecano and Saliba are being managed. Both missed Saturday’s training session with back concerns. Both are still expected to start.

Marcus Thuram (calf) is a game-time decision but was not in the projected XI anyway.

Lucas Digne has won the left-back battle with Theo Hernández, which hands him the hardest job on the pitch: Lamine Yamal.

Mbappé has scored the opening goal in five of France’s six matches this tournament.

The full 26-player roster is in our France World Cup squad guide.

Spain Team News: Fully Fit and 37 Unbeaten

Luis de la Fuente reports no injuries. Spain’s problem is picking from abundance.

Nico Williams and Yeremy Pino are back. Both missed time since the group stage and are pushing for a start from the bench.

Mikel Merino is the story of the knockouts. He is the first player in World Cup history to score the winner in two knockout ties as a substitute. He beat Portugal in the Round of 16 and Belgium in the quarterfinal, both late, both off the bench. De la Fuente must decide whether the super-sub finally starts.

Unai Simón’s record run just ended. His streak of six consecutive World Cup clean sheets, the longest in tournament history, was broken by Belgium.

Spain are unbeaten in 37 straight competitive matches, a run stretching back to March 2023. This is their first World Cup semifinal since 2010, the year they won it all.

The full roster is in our Spain World Cup squad guide.

Head-to-Head: France vs Spain

The World Cup history is short. The recent history is spectacular.

YearCompetitionResult
2006World Cup Round of 16France 3-1 Spain
2021Nations League finalFrance 2-1 Spain
2024Euro semifinalSpain 2-1 France
2025Nations League semifinalSpain 5-4 France

The 2006 match is the only previous World Cup meeting. Ribéry, Vieira and Zidane scored.

The last two meetings went to Spain, and both belonged to Lamine Yamal: a wonder goal in the Euro 2024 semifinal at 16, then a brace in that absurd 5-4 Nations League semifinal a year ago.

France have not beaten Spain since 2021.

Round of 32Beat Sweden 3-0Beat Austria 3-0
Round of 16Beat Paraguay 1-0Beat Portugal 1-0 (Merino)

France have not conceded a knockout goal. Six goals scored, zero against.

Mbappé and Dembélé scored against Morocco, a rematch of the 2022 semifinal that ended the same way for the Atlas Lions.

Spain needed Merino twice. Belgium ended their record shutout streak, but not their tournament.

The Mbappé vs Yamal Angle

This match decides more than a finalist.

Mbappé leads the Golden Boot with 8 goals and 3 assists. Dembélé has 5 goals and 2 assists. Olise has 5 assists. France’s front line has been the most productive attack in the tournament.

Yamal has one goal contribution all tournament. He came into the World Cup carrying an injury and has not yet produced his Euro 2024 level. Against France, historically, he always has.

Messi sits level with Mbappé on 8 goals and plays tomorrow. Whoever wins today’s Golden Boot battle may hand the trophy race to Wednesday’s semifinal.

What the Winner Gets

The winner goes to the final. Sunday, July 19, at New York New Jersey Stadium, 3:00 PM ET.

Their opponent comes from England vs Argentina, played tomorrow at 3:00 PM ET in Atlanta. Our full guide to that match is here: England vs Argentina live stream.

The loser plays the third-place match. Saturday, July 18, in Miami.

France are chasing a third star and their third final in a row. Spain are chasing a second title, sixteen years after South Africa.

France vs Spain Prediction

Control against chaos. Spain want the ball; France want the space behind it.

Spain’s midfield of Rodri, Zubimendi and Pedri is the best in the tournament at strangling a game. But France do not need the ball. Mbappé has punished exactly this kind of high line all summer, and Spain’s centre-backs will live on the halfway line.

The Tchouaméni fitness call matters more than any other. Without him, France’s shield in front of the back four is thinner, and Pedri finds the pockets.

Set pieces favour France. Transition favours France. Ninety minutes of rhythm favours Spain.
