FAQ About World Cup 2026 Semifinals
How many teams play in the World Cup 2026 semifinals?
How do teams qualify for the World Cup 2026 semifinals?
A team reaches the semifinals by winning its quarterfinal, played July 9 to 11. Each of the four quarterfinal winners takes one of the four semifinal places. Every knockout match is single elimination, so one win moves a team on and one loss sends it out.
What happens if a World Cup 2026 semifinal is tied?
There are no draws in the knockout stage. If a semifinal is level after 90 minutes, two 15-minute periods of extra time are played. If it is still tied after extra time, the match is decided by a penalty shootout, so there is always a winner on the day.
How many matches does a 2026 World Cup finalist play in total?
Eight. A team that reaches the Final plays three group games plus the Round of 32, Round of 16, quarterfinal, semifinal and Final. That is one more than in the old 32-team format, because 2026 added the new Round of 32.
Is there a third-place match after the semifinals?
Yes. The two semifinal losers meet in the third-place match on Saturday, July 18, at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. It is played the day before the Final and decides which team finishes third overall.
Have the host nations reached a World Cup semifinal before?
The United States reached the semifinals once, at the first World Cup in 1930, finishing third. Mexico’s best run is the quarterfinals, in 1970 and 1986. Canada had never won a World Cup knockout match before co-hosting in 2026.
Where is the World Cup 2026 final held?
The Final is on Sunday, July 19, 2026, at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, which FIFA calls New York New Jersey Stadium during the tournament. Kick-off is 3:00 PM ET, and the two semifinal winners contest it.
The World Cup 2026 semifinals are the last step before the Final, two matches on July 14 and 15 in Dallas and Atlanta that leave just two teams standing.
The four teams are set once the quarterfinals finish on July 11, but the dates, venues and bracket path are locked, so you can plan around them now.
Keep this page handy, because the moment the quarterfinals end, the semifinal matchups and results drop straight in, and the winners are one game from lifting the trophy in New Jersey.
